At Heritage Banking Company, safeguarding of your personal and financial information is very important to us. Whether you are banking online, by phone or visiting one of our Experience Centers, we are committed to protecting your valuable personal information.
WHAT IS PHISHING?
Phishing is a type of fraud designed to steal your valuable personal data, such as debit card numbers/PIN, passwords, account data, or other information. Phishing messages can include logos with Heritage Banking Company Brand and other information that have been taken from the bank’s websites.
HOW TO TELL IF AN E-MAIL MESSAGE IS FRAUDULENT
Here are a few things to look out for if you think an e-mail message is a phishing scam:
- Requests for personal information in an e-mail messageThe bank will not ask you to send your password, login details or other personal information through e-mails.
- Urgent wordingE.g. “If you don’t respond within 48 hours, your account will be closed.” phishing messages convey a sense of urgency so that you will respond immediately without thinking. Phishing e-mails might even claim that your response is required because your account might have been compromised.
- Fake linksThe links that you are urged to click may contain all or part of the bank’s name and are usually “masked,” meaning that the link you see does not take you to the bank’s webpage but a fake website.Example of masked URL address; The URL https://www.hbng.com could appear instead as: www.hb.com. Or www.heritagebanknigeria.com
- AttachmentsMany phishing schemes ask you to open attachments, which can then infect your computer with a virus or spyware. So be sure not to open attachments in suspicious e-mail messages. Any attachment that you want to view should be saved first, and then scanned with an up-to-date antivirus program before you open it.
REMEMBER, your PIN, password and other personal information are confidential and should NEVER be disclosed to anyone.
